Facebook Announces “Shops” for Facebook and Instagram

Facebook has tried to move into the e-commerce world for years. Finally, with a little push from COVID-19, they have done it.

Facebook has launched “shops” on Instagram and Facebook. This feature makes it easy for businesses to create a single online store that users can access on both platforms. Businesses simply choose their products, then personalize the look. It is free and simple. This allows any seller, no matter their budget or size, to bring their businesses online.

The Rollout:

The rollout is going to be slow. It will begin with those who use Instagram profile shops and will expand from there. Any eligible shop will receive an email notifying them of their eligibility and instructions on how to use it. This is only the beginning. Facebook has already announced other new functions for their “shops” to be released in the coming year. Including allowing customers to message businesses from shop listings through Messenger, WhatsApp, or Instagram Direct. Future customers will also be able to view a businesses’ shop and make purchases from within one of these messenger streams. Soon, sellers, brands, and creators will be able to tag products from their Facebook Shop or catalog before going live and those products will be shown at the bottom of the video so people can easily tap to learn more and purchase. The goal for “shops” is to make it as easy to use as possible, so Facebook plans to keep adding features to achieve their goal.

Given the rise in eCommerce activity, as a result of the COVID-19 lockdowns now is the time for Facebook and businesses to make its next big push in this respect. This push will create long-lasting changes that all businesses should prepare for to stay ahead. Interested in how "shops" might benefit your online business?
